LSWR Passenger Brake Vans
Background:
These interesting vehicles originated around 1906/7 as Third and Brake Third passenger carriages. During the first World War they were converted for use in Ambulance trains. and did not return to the company until about 1920. By this time carriage development was moving on and the decision was taken to refurbish the vehicles as Passenger Brake Vans rather than as passenger carrying stock.
The first vehicles entered service about the mid 20s, all remained in general use until the mid 40s, one or two lasted until the early 50s. However, in addition many were transferred for further departmental use and in this guise at least one lasted until 1961.
Two types have been produced in model form: an end brake version - diagram 870 - and a centre brake version - diagram 869
